Getting the ball rolling

Well, here it is my first blogging effort. The thought of going public with my ponderings and imaginings is a strange one. There is that desire to be connected and to communicate - to be known, I guess. And then there is the challenge to be real with the stuff and therefore opening oneself to critique - hopefully encouragement too!.

I've realised there are so many people that I would love to chat with but we just don't get the chance to sit around the coffee table. This is part of the reason for doing this. Many of you are scattered around the globe doing all sorts of interesting stuff. Some of you live just down the road but our busy lives just don't seem to find time for this sort of dialogue.

It's nearly April! Another year moving quickly. But a pretty significant date is appearing on my calendar. Football season is here! Donning the boots, getting this body into gear for running around a park, preparing for the tackles - imagining the goal scoring - has been my ritual for over 35 years.

This year I turn 40. I play the game very differently to when I was 20. Perhaps the same competitive instinct, but channelled in different ways. Gone is the relentless running, the obsession with my own game, the need to be the best player on the park. Instead I'm finding shorter routes to get to the right places; getting others playing to their potential; and I'm realising that I'm definitely not the best player on the park!

I'm starting to find an appreciation for facilitating others to succeed, compared to that overwhelming desire to fulfil my own personal ambitions. I hadn't realised how rewarding it would be to be part of a legacy that carries on way past my own personal contribution. getting to coach my son Arlo has really helped this. It's made me take a look at the legacy I'm part of and how others have made a way for me. Being part of something much bigger than myself.

Anyway, first game this Saturday. Looking forward to a new season.
